Director: Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Screenplay: Tom Stoppard (based on the novel by Vladamir Nabokov)
Role: Hermann
Working with the young, experimental director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and with a script by Tom Stoppard, Dirk gives what he considered perhaps his most complete performance as Hermann Hermann, a bourgeois Russian émigré, whose personality gradually fragments. Fassbinder’s final cut, however, induced in Dirk feelings all too appropriate to the title.
