DIRK BOGARDE’s full name is Dirk Jules Gaston Gaspard Ulrich Niven van den Bogaerde. He has been one of England’s top stars since the early ’50s. His mother was an actress; his father, retired art editor of the London Times, didn’t think acting much of a profession for a grown man.
Dirk was born in London on March 28. 1920. Before World War II he played bit roles on the London stage. Demobilized in 1947 after five years in Royal Army Intelligence. he made his first major acting impression a year later in the play “Power Without Glory,” and as a result signed a long-term movie contract. He has appeared in some 50 films and is equally at home in comedy and drama. His portrayal of a corrupt “gentleman’s gentleman” in “The Servant” won him England’s 1964 Actor of the Year award. His latest pictures are “Darling” and “Modesty Blaise.” He starred in the recent NBC-TV play, “Blithe Spirit.”
A bachelor who seldom goes to restaurants or night clubs and whose name rarely appears in gossip columns, Dirk lives in a humble 16th Century house filled with priceless antiques.
