Lovers of classical music will revel in this life-story of the great pianist- composer, Franz Liszt. Others may have some reservations, because a great deal of the film is concerned entirely with piano playing.
But it is beautifully put over and Dirk Bogarde does a remarkable job in pretending to play the piano.
But this long, lush, highly coloured piece: has other attractions. There’s a clever performance by Bogarde showing the three sides to Liszt’s character – the devil-may-care lover of women and the gay life, the dedicated musician, and the spiritual side which finally drove him to a monastery.
Also, our first meeting with lovely Capucine, who without a great deal to do contrives to look lovely and suggest that she has an acting future.
